Echoes of a Lost Craft
“In the 1980s, I worked as an apprentice to Abu Ibrahim, a Palestinian wood craftsman from the Gaza Strip. I was drawn to his traditional art that simply connected utility and form. His workshop, filled with the aroma of citrus wood, was a tiny niche on the edge of the bustling market street. From my cramped, usual corner, I used to smell and watch the movements of his hands. In easy friendship, I became part of the local scenery. Most of the time, we were silent, in Arabic.”
