Queens and Princesses, Consorts and Harlots
Queen Athaliah, ruled over judah for six years, until she was murdered by the temple priests. She was probably the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, another biblical queen who was not looked upon favorably by the bible and the historical record. The Book of Maccabees tells us about Queen Shlomzion, who ruled the Hasmonean Kingdom for a decade – the last independent Jewish monarch. The Jewish historian Josephus reveals that Shalom and Alexandra, sister and mother in law of King Herod, were actually the real power brokers behind the throne, and documents found in the Judea Desert caves, uncover the history of Babatha and Salome, powerful and independent Jewish business women who died in the Bar Kochba rebellion.
In this new ERETZ book Yadin Roman focuses on the many outstanding Jewish women of history, restoring them to their well-deserved place in the annals of the Jewish People.
