Reassembling a Lost World
Ten tons of carved basalt stones. A monumental synagogue gable scattered among the ruins for centuries. A team of archaeologists, conservators, and researchers attempting to put it back together.
At the ancient synagogue of Chorazim, overlooking the Sea of Galilee, an extraordinary reconstruction project is underway. Massive carved stones, some weighing two to three tons, have been transported to the Israel Museum, where miniature replicas produced by 3D printing are helping researchers solve the architectural puzzle before attempting to reassemble the original stones.
This is just one of the remarkable stories documented in Synagogia, a major new illustrated album from ERETZ Magazine.
The Synagogue Through the Centuries
From modest houses of assembly during the Second Temple period to the magnificent buildings of Late Antiquity, the synagogue evolved into the center of Jewish religious and communal life.
Across the Land of Israel, ancient Jewish communities erected synagogues adorned with monumental façades, carved stone decorations, colorful mosaics, inscriptions, and elaborate architectural details.
More than a hundred ancient synagogues have been identified, but many questions about their architecture, decoration, and use remain unresolved.
A major exhibition opening at the Israel Museum in June 2027, together with a project to conserve and restore twelve ancient synagogues, is providing an unprecedented opportunity to investigate these remarkable buildings.
A Book Unlike Any Other
Synagogia follows the archaeologists, architects, conservators, and researchers as they uncover, study, and reconstruct the surviving remains of ancient synagogues.
Through exceptional photography, historical narratives, architectural illustrations, and digital reconstructions, the book will document both the magnificent buildings of the past and the fascinating modern effort to rediscover them.
This is not an exhibition catalogue. It is a richly illustrated narrative of archaeological discovery, architectural reconstruction, and the evolution of one of Judaism’s most enduring institutions.
